The Way We Are Now: Families and Communities at the Center of the Syndemic

The wait is over! NCFR is now accepting proposals for its 2023 Annual Conference. Please view the full call for proposals for details on conference presentation formats, criteria, topics, and more.

Family scholars and practitioners from across all disciplines and career levels are invited to submit proposals for papers, posters, symposia, lightning papers, collaborative workshops, and more.

NCFR Member Groups
Attend a Writing Accountability Hour on Fridays This Winter


First one: Friday, Jan. 27 / noon to 1 p.m. CT

The Family and Communication Focus Group at NCFR will host three writing accountability sessions this winter.

When: These virtual meetings will be the last Friday of the month at noon (CT) in January (27th), February (24th), and March (31st).

What: Each writing hour will begin by writing quietly together for 45 minutes, and the last 15 minutes will be for discussion, networking, and socializing. If you need to arrive late or leave early, it's not a problem at all — please join us in the time you have! You are welcome to work on whatever writing you need to accomplish. Our goal is to provide a welcoming space and time for folks to move their writing forward.

Who: These sessions are for members of the Family and Communication Focus Group. Any active NCFR member may join this group for free by visiting https://my.ncfr.org and adding this focus group to their membership.

How: Links to each Zoom meeting can be found in the link below. To access, you must be a Family and Communication Focus Group member and logged in to your NCFR account.

Building a Nonprofit Family Life Education Business
Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023 / 11 a.m. to noon CT

Achieving a nonprofit, organizational status provides an opportunity for a family professional to form a business that clearly focuses on the services families in the community need, while also allowing an opportunity to focus on the expertise and interests of the professional.

Utilizing the presenter's own nonprofit experiences, this webinar will provide an overview of the fundamentals needed to form a nonprofit business or organization.

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:
  • Identify the differences between for-profit and nonprofit entities
  • Form components of a nonprofit including bylaws, board roles, conflict of policy, and budget
  • Apply for a nonprofit status from the federal government

Approved for 1 hour of CFLE continuing education credit.

Teaching Tuesdays is a new quarterly, interactive opportunity for NCFR members who teach in an academic setting to learn more about academic teaching. Presenter(s) will talk briefly about a topic related to teaching followed by a discussion with the presenter(s) and audience members. The discussion will focus on applying the information presented to enhance classroom pedagogy.

This first Teaching Tuesday will address ways in which we can create strong, healthy learning environments for educators and students. Read more >>

Athena Chan
NCFR Award Spotlight
Athena Chan Recognized for Student Excellence & Potential in Family Science

This week, we recognize Athena Chung Yin Chan, M.S., recipient of the NCFR Student Award, which is given to an NCFR graduate student member who has demonstrated excellence as a student and shows great potential for contributing to Family Science.

Ms. Chan is a doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota in family social science. As an international student from Hong Kong, she recognized that the global pandemic was a unique opportunity to study cross-cultural resilience processes in families.

She has published her cross-cultural findings from the early months of the pandemic and presented her most recent findings at the NCFR conference. Ms. Chan is pictured above (left) with Jennifer L. Doty, Ph.D., Award Selection Committee Chair.

NCFR's Honors Student Program recognizes the exceptional academic, service, and leadership accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate students in the Family Science discipline.

You can apply completely online. All application materials and the application fee for spring graduates must be received by March 1, 2022.

Program Director of Marriage and Family Therapy
Virginia Tech Human Development & Family Science

The Department of Human Development and Family Science at Virginia Tech, seeks an associate professor and director of the marriage and family therapy (MFT) doctoral program. This is a 12-month full-time position. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023. Candidates for the position should be at the rank of associate professor and have a record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, advising, and professional engagement. The ideal program director is a dynamic and engaged leader with the administrative and interpersonal skills necessary to guide an energetic and diverse group of faculty, staff, and students committed to a scholar-practitioner focus. Candidates should also have the clinical and supervisory experience necessary to effectively train doctoral students from a variety of backgrounds.

University of Maryland College Park, Department of Family Science

The University of Maryland School of Public Health seeks a chair and professor for its Department of Family Science. The chair will oversee and ensure excellence in (1) academic programs, curriculum development, and clinic operations; (2) facilitate and support faculty and student pursuit of research grants and projects, and (3) facilitate faculty and student participation in interdisciplinary research programs and service activities, and 4) provide fiscal management and oversight of unit operations. Previous leadership and administrative experience are required; academic leadership experience is preferred.

One-Year Visiting Assistant Professor for Child and Family Studies
Berea College

The Child and Family Studies Department at Berea College seeks a one-year visiting assistant professor position. Candidates should have expertise in family systems theory and analysis of family and relationship functioning; ability to adapt and teach a variety of courses related to families; experience with active learning methodology and implementation and course management systems is preferred. The successful candidate's primary teaching responsibilities will be courses in the child and family studies program. The successful candidate may also be expected to contribute to the general studies program; supervise and mentor students in labor positions; utilize the Child Development Laboratory for field work and/or research; work in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional peers; and participate in department, division, and college meetings.
