NCFR Member Research Viewing Declining Fertility in South Korea through Family and Policy Lens
In a recent address on fertility in Seoul, South Korea, NCFR Fellow Karen Bogenschneider, Ph.D., framed her talk using an approach familiar to NCFR members, but perceived as a fresh perspective in South Korea—looking at fertility through the lens of family. The Forum was a joint event hosted by two academic associations and sponsored by the government Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and CBS.
Subsequently, Dr. Bogenschneider was invited to write a paper that views declining fertility through a family and three policy lenses.

Next NCFR Webinar
Integrating Adult Learning Principles into Family Life Education Practices Tuesday, Aug. 27 / 11 a.m. – Noon CT
Presented by: Mackenzie Johnson, M.S., CFLE
Despite most professors and Family Life Educators having a primary job responsibility of educating adults, many find themselves with minimal training on the basic principles of adult learning. Given the significant amount of time education professionals spend developing, implementing, and evaluating educational content for learners, there is a clear need for a deeper understanding of the foundational concepts of adult education. This webinar is designed to bridge that gap by providing participants with a strong base of adult learning science from which they can make informed decisions about how to enhance their own teaching methods.
In this webinar, Mackenzie Johnson, M.S., CFLE, will provide practical strategies for how to engage with adult learners appropriately and effectively across nearly any delivery format or educational setting.

Upcoming NCFR Teaching Tuesday
The Need for Cultural Humility in Classrooms Tuesday, Sept. 17 / Noon – 1 p.m. CT Free for NCFR members to attend / Become a member
Presenter: Dee Hill-Zuganelli, Ph.D.
Cultural humility emphasizes an ongoing process of continual learning and critical self-reflection to work effectively with diverse families and communities, and challenge institutions to take accountability for their practices. Students are expected to encounter unfamiliar situations at the start of the cultural humility process and are assumed to handle challenges proactively. Today’s restriction of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives requires Family Science students to seek additional support to stay motivated for continual learning. During this Teaching Tuesday, Dee Hill-Zuganelli, Ph.D., will share teaching and supportive strategies to address such barriers in building cultural humility.
After a brief presentation, participants will have the opportunity to discuss:
- the fit of Family Science courses into the cultural humility framework;
- overcoming stumbling blocks encountered in the learning process;
- how to stay dedicated and support oneself as anti-DEI initiatives unfold.
REGISTER FOR SEPT. 17

Call for Authors | Family Focus
Methods and Measures in Family Science Deadline Soon Approaching: Submit Your Proposal by Aug. 15
Interactions among individual family members are embedded in diverse social, cultural, economic, and political contexts. Yet historical measures and methods may not reflect interactions within and across families who have been historically marginalized. Understanding family relationships and interactions considering these intricacies demands innovation in the ways Family Scientists define family well-being and in the exploration of how family structures, processes, and relationships influence well-being.
Articles are sought that examine a wide range of methods and measures to deepen the scientific understanding of family functioning and well-being. Articles are welcomed that critique existing methods and measures, provide innovative designs and promising new approaches, and adapt tools and techniques from other disciplines to the study of family functioning and well-being.
