2024 Call for Proposals: 3 Things to Know

Building Resilience Among Individuals, Families, and Communities

Conference proposals are now being accepted for NCFR 2024 (Nov. 20-23 in Bellevue, Washington). The full call for proposals and instructions can be found on our website. Proposals are due March 4, 2024 — by 11:59 p.m. PST.

Here are three things to know:
  1. Proposal mentoring is available. Email Cindy Winter at cindywinter@ncfr.org by Tuesday, Feb. 15, to be matched with a mentor.
  2. The proposal grading rubric is back and you can review it as you prepare to submit your proposal.
  3. Proposal reviewers are needed to ensure a high-quality program in November. See the call below and also linked here!

Family scholars and practitioners from across all disciplines and career levels are invited to submit proposals for papers, posters, symposia, lightning papers, collaborative workshops, and more.

Become a Conference Proposal Reviewer


NCFR seeks volunteers to review conference proposals. This is a unique service opportunity open to NCFR members only.

Being a reviewer is a great opportunity to enhance your involvement with NCFR and ensure a high-quality conference program!

Faculty, researchers, doctoral students, and new professionals are all invited to volunteer. All proposals are blind peer-reviewed.

If you've reviewed proposals in the past, we would love to have you review again. Reviewers must sign up each year.


Sign up by Monday, March 4, — the same day proposals are due. Thank you for your consideration, and thanks to those who have signed up already!

Proposal reviewers are also sought for the TCRM Workshop. You may select this option when you complete the reviewer sign up form.

NCFR members received a link to this year's 2024 NCFR election ballots in their email on Thursday, Feb. 1. Check your junk mail, spam, or clutter folders. The deadline to vote in the elections is Feb. 29, 2024. See the nominees for national offices.

NCFR members are also invited to nominate themselves or their colleagues for positions on the 2025 election slate. Submit a nomination.

Family Relations Seeks Editorial Fellows for 2024

Applications due Feb. 14, 2024

Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science (FR), published by NCFR, seeks candidates for three editorial fellowships to begin April 1, 2024, and end March 31, 2025.

The program focus includes increasing participation in the editorial process for those whose voices have historically been underrepresented in the editorial review and publication process for major journals. Editorial Fellows work closely with the Family Relations Editorial Team, engaging in each stage of the editorial process — from manuscript submission to article publication.

Candidates who have completed a postdoc within the past 3 years, or have completed their doctorate in the past 5 years are also invited to apply.

This webinar will cover key concepts articulated by family stress theory (e.g., stress, crisis, resources, perceptions, and coping), key concepts of family functioning (e.g., roles, boundaries, flourishing), and why stress is difficult for families. Encouraging Research through Student Mentorship

Thursday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m. 12:30 p.m. CT

Presented by: Ryan G. Carlson, Ph.D.; Naomi J. Wheeler, Ph.D.; and Nakita Carroll, M.A.

A mutually beneficial partnership between faculty mentors and student mentees can increase both the quality and quantity of research produced, while also improving the skills of both the learners and instructors.

This webinar for any faculty—new or seasoned—will demonstrate how to  develop and maintain a research mentoring relationship in a university setting. Strategies for addressing current factors that influence success within the mentoring process will be shared, as well as examples of implementing research mentorship across universities and disciplines.

Specifically, attendees will leave this webinar with the ability to:
  • Apply relational and systemic processes to develop and maintain research mentoring relationships;
  • Recognize and overcome common challenges for developing mutually-beneficial mentoring relationships; and
  • Implement intentional practices to reduce disparities in the mentoring process.

Research Publication
Post-Pandemic, Latino Parents With Low Incomes Remain Concentrated in Jobs Offering Few Workplace Flexibilities


This new brief presents the first national portrait of the industries and occupations that employ Latino parents with low incomes pre- and post-pandemic and examines the workplace flexibilities adopted (or not) by the industries in which they are employed.

Findings suggest that the gap in access to these employer-provided benefits between Latino parents with low incomes and parents who work in other occupations and industries may be wider than before the pandemic.
