Submit Your Proposal to NCFR 2025
NCFR 2025 / Nov. 19-22 / Baltimore, Maryland / Baltimore Marriott Waterfront
Conference Theme: "Power, Privilege, and Difference: Lived Experiences of Changing Families and Societies"
The time has come—submit your completed research, or research in progress to the 2025 NCFR Annual Conference! The proposal submission system is open until April 1, 2025, 11:59 p.m. PDT.
This year, NCFR brings some changes to your proposal submission process:
-
Additional time to submit your work for consideration! By starting later in the year, it gave you more time on all of your calendars (academic, personal, professional) to ready your submission.
-
Concise abstracts encouraged! (500 word-max!) This will make your submission quicker and more efficient.
-
A unified call for proposals! Instead of submitting your proposal to a specific NCFR section, you will be able to select up to three of NCFR's sections and/or NCFR's SNP group—whichever most aligns with your topic!
-
Refined subject areas! Options have been streamlined from nearly 400 to about 50. This allows for curated sessions that integrate multiple NCFR section perspectives.
PLUS, this year you may submit proposals for work in progress (as long as it is sufficiently developed by the time of the conference).
We are excited about this year's reimagined annual conference and cannot wait to share in the excitement with you in Baltimore, Maryland! See you there!
>>Deadline: April 1, 2025, 11:59 p.m. PDT<<

New JFTR Special Issue Published March 2025
Theorizing Academia: Critical and Futuristic Perspectives
A new special issue is available from NCFR's Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR), themed "Theorizing Academia: Critical and Futuristic Perspectives" and guest-edited by NCFR Fellows Ramona Faith Oswald, Ph.D., and Anisa M. Zvonkovic, Ph.D. (pictured left to right)
The issue "explores the positionality of feminist administrators within Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) and their efforts to enhance the discipline's visibility, value, and impact," according to the guest editors' introduction. Collectively, Drs. Oswald and Zvonkovic write, the papers "examine the status and boundaries of HDFS within higher education" and "push back against neoliberalism by arguing that human well-being should be the bottom line for HDFS (and Human Sciences) programs."

New NCFR Research
Published between March 2—8
Each week, we look to share some of the latest research from all three of NCFR's scholarly journals advancing Family Science — Journal of Marriage and Family (JMF), Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science (FR), and Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR).
Check out these early-view open access articles, one of which was written by an NCFR member, published in JMF: |

• Occupational autonomy, paid maternity leave, and mothers' return to work after childbirth — Camille Portier, Ph.D.
This article examines whether mothers rely more on occupational autonomy to balance work and childrearing when paid maternity leave is unavailable.
• Yes, parents, it reflects on you: Norms and Metanorms regulating teen daughters and parents — NCFR member Monica Kirkpatrick Johnson, Ph.D., (pictured), Stefanie Mollborn, Ph.D., Christine Horne, J.D., Ph.D.
This particular article, written by an NCFR member, examines normative expectations of teens and parents related to teen behaviors in multiple domains; results suggest that to understand parenting expectations and family dynamics, researchers should consider the wider complex of behaviors and expectations within which they occur.
• Mate preferences and marriage-related behaviors: The case of Japan — Yuko Hara, Ph.D., Wei-hsin Yu, Ph.D.
This study examines contributors to mate preferences and their changes, as well as behaviors corresponding to mate preferences in Japan, where mate preferences likely play a role in its steady marriage decline.
• Educational gap between partners and sterilization — Kate H. Choi, Ph.D.
This study compares the sterilization behavior of couples with varying joint education levels and union types.

Growing Up in a Warming World: How Wildfire Smoke Affects Early Childhood Development
On Jan. 27, the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University released a new brief with the Early Childhood Scientific Council on Equity and the Environment (ECSCEE), which examines how wildfire smoke impacts children’s development and health. This brief provides strategies for policymakers, practitioners, and community leaders for protecting children and caregivers.
Some strategies include:
-
Support access to air filtration systems and masks to ensure children are protected during wildfire events and after, as pollution remains high.
-
Activate localized air quality alerts and ensure that pregnant people and caregivers receive them.
-
Implement policies for improved forest management to address conditions like higher temperatures and increased droughts caused by climate change.

Video of the Week
Remember The Ladies: The Importance of Women's History
Let's recognize & celebrate Women's History Month! In this TEDx Talk, the speaker, Emily Krichbaum, Ph.D., unapologetically declares, "And of course, women made homes, but they also made history." She shares how women are missing from the narratives offered in today's classrooms—"remember the ladies" because "stories matter." Krichbaum's non-profit organization, Remember The Ladies, helps teachers and school districts incorporate more women's history into their classrooms.
