NCFR Signs Letters Advocating for Science, Nonprofits


NCFR has signed two letters advocating for nonprofit organizations, and for science and scientific research in the U.S.: 

• The National Council of Nonprofits spearheaded an open letter to the U.S. Congress, signed by more than 4,500 charitable organizations. NCFR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

• The American Psychological Association coordinated a letter to advocate for science and those who further it. The letter will also be published in The Chronicle of Education.

Apply for a Family Relations Editorial Fellowship

Apply by March 10


The editorial team of NCFR’s Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science is seeking three Editorial Fellows, with the objective of increasing participation in the editorial process for early-career professionals and those who have an interest in Family Science. Persons whose voices have historically been underrepresented are encouraged to apply.  


Fellows will develop experience with and skills in manuscript review, engage in each stage of the editorial process, evaluate translational implications of research, and become familiar with Family Science research from around the world. 


Apply by March 10, 2025. Successful candidates will be notified by late March 2025. Fellowships will run from April 15, 2025, to April 14, 2027.

Funding Opportunity for NCFR members
NCFR Olson Grant Application Opens March 3


The NCFR Olson Grant: Bridging Research, Theory, and Practice will begin its fifth year of accepting applications on Monday, March 3. This $10,000 annual grant — made possible by namesake and benefactor David H. Olson, Ph.D. — is available to current NCFR members working to creatively contribute to the discipline of Family Science by uniting research, theory, and practice in their work.

Ms. Maxymiv has worked with first responders utilizing critical incident stress management/debriefing, and in hospice bereavement care. As an academic, she taught bereavement courses at Kent State University.

Ms. Peake is a national consultant and speaker on diversity, equity, and inclusion in education, youth development, and community engagement. She has taught graduate and undergraduate students and served as the Director of Diversity and Community Outreach Initiatives at Western Michigan University. Ms. Peake has experience on school boards and committees and approaches her work from her multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and multi-cultural identities, research, service, and scholarship.

CFLE Network: Family Resource Management

Submit Articles by March 15


The spring 2025 issue of CFLE Network will explore Family Resource Management (FRM), one of the 10 content areas required to become a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE). FRM is an important, and often stressful, topic for families. Across time, many families navigate scarce resources such as time or money, value or goal conflicts, and difficult decision-making. CFLEs have the knowledge and tools to support families on the journey toward better resource management. Share how you address FRM in your Family Life Education (FLE) work.

NCFR Publications: Important Update
NCFR Nexus is Coming Fall 2025


The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) is excited to share an important update about NCFR’s publications. Beginning in fall 2025, NCFR’s quarterly publications Family Focus (currently part of *NCFR Report) and CFLE Network will transition into a new, quarterly, digital-only publication called NCFR Nexus. This publication, designed for NCFR members and Certified Family Life Educators (CFLEs), will serve as a central hub for sharing and gathering information across NCFR’s transdisciplinary community of researchers, educators, practitioners, and policymakers. You can be an NCFR member or a CFLE to access NCFR Nexus. You do not need to be both. NCFR welcomes Beth Maddock Magistad, Ph.D., CFLE, as the editor of this new publication.


Through diverse authorship and a commitment to research and practice integration, NCFR Nexus will support NCFR’s new mission by:

✔️ Advancing a thriving transdisciplinary field

✔️ Expanding scientific knowledge and application

✔️ Contributing to just societies through informed perspectives


As a member and CFLE benefit, NCFR Nexus will continue to provide exclusive, high-quality content to support professional growth and impact. Stay tuned to NCFR communication channels for more details in the coming months!


To support this transition, the winter 2024, spring 2025, and summer 2025 issues of Family Focus and the winter 2025 and spring 2025 issues of CFLE Network will be digital-only. Additionally, there will not be a summer 2025 issue of CFLE Network as we focus on developing NCFR Nexus. NCFR appreciates your understanding as we work to bring you an enhanced and more impactful publication.

NCFR Awards & Recognition

Reuben Hill Award


Congratulations to Hannah Williamson, Ph.D., (pictured left), and Megan Tess Fischer, M.A., (pictured right), recipients of the Reuben Hill Award, which is presented to the author(s) of an outstanding article or book that combines theory and methodology to analyze and interpret a significant family issue. 


Dr. Williamson is an associate professor of human development and Family Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Megan's research in graduate school focused on the effects of external stressors on relationship satisfaction and stability.


Their research article is titled, "Household Income Differentiates Quantity and Quality of Shared Spousal Time."

In Memoriam

Helen T.M. Bayer


It is with regret that we inform the NCFR community that Helen T.M. Bayer, Ph.D., passed away on Dec. 8, 2019, at the age of 98. She was a longtime member of NCFR for 70 years.


Dr. Bayer was a member of several organizations, and was elected Fellow of the American Sociological Association. She trailblazed several efforts, to include her tenure as department Extension leader at Cornell University, and as project director of the Office of Head Start regional training office. She was also later elected emeritus at Cornell University. Dr. Bayer made many contributions towards parenting education.

One-armed College Basketball Player Makes Women's Division III History


Baileigh Sinaman-Daniel, a 22-year-old guard at Lesley University (Cambridge, Mass.), has become the first NCAA Division III women's basketball player with one arm to score in a collegiate game. She dealt with the disappointment of being cut from the team her senior year in high school, but then thought to herself, "what's stopping me from doing this in college." And since then, she's been on a path to history—making history and baskets!

Assistant Lecturer in Early Childhood, Youth, and Family Studies

Ball State University


The Department of Early Childhood, Youth, and Family Studies (ECYFS) is searching for an innovative and passionate instructor to contribute to a growing, collaborative department. This is a full-time, campus-based, 10-month assistant lecturer position. This is a renewable contract faculty position. The ideal candidate will teach undergraduate courses (four courses in the fall and four courses in the spring, with optional teaching opportunities over the summer); support and mentor students; provide input regarding curriculum for the Family Science concentration including the development of new courses as needed; and actively promote the Family Life Educator and youth worker certifications. The successful candidate will participate in university-wide events such as commencement, as well as general service to the department, college, and university.


This position is scheduled to begin August 2025.

Location: Muncie, Indiana
Required Education: Master's degree in human development and family studies (HDFS), Family Science, or a closely related field.

Clinical Assistant Professor in Couple and Family Therapy

University of Georgia


The University of Georgia College of Family and Consumer Sciences is seeking applications for a clinical assistant professor non-tenure track, academic year position with a 90% teaching, 5% research, and 5% service appointment. Applicants to this position will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses (seven courses each academic year); supervise majors–support their professional development in community-based placements; liaise with community-based placements to support/develop practicum sites. The successful candidate will participate in department, college, and university governance, as well as in relevant professional organizations. The successful candidate will contribute to presentations and publications relevant to the practice, and translation of science to practice through relevant grants and contracts.


This position is scheduled to begin August 1, 2025.

Location: Athens, Georgia
Required Education: Doctorate in human development and family studies (HDFS) or a closely related field, earned master’s or doctorate in couple/marriage and family therapy.
Application Deadline: Full consideration will be given to applications received by March 21, 2025. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
