Helping Families Thrive in a New “Normal”

Research and theory help to understand how families adjust and are impacted by normative and non-normative life-changing events, such as the transition to parenthood, divorce, remarriage, empty nesting, and the death of a loved one.

Is a return to normal possible, or even desirable? What would a new normal look like? More importantly, what do families need to thrive in the new normal?

The purpose of the spring 2022 Family Focus, a section of NCFR Report member magazine, is to offer some insight on how Family Science can advance research, practice, and policy that supports families in embracing and thriving in a new normal.

Authors should indicate intent to submit by Sept. 22, 2021, by completing the online proposal form. Final articles are due Oct. 15, 2021.

Translating Terms to Action: Applying Cultural Competence in Your Work

Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021 //
11 a.m. – Noon Central Time

To be successful in working with individuals from different cultures, family researchers and practitioners must be able to form an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, and mutual respect. This includes practicing complex skills such as fully understanding one’s own values and culture, being receptive to divergent viewpoints, and being respectful and willing to consider these differences.

This webinar will focus on articulating and demonstrating how to practice using a culturally-informed lens that can be used in teaching, research, or clinical settings. Particular attention will be focused on translating abstract concepts (e.g., inclusion, diversity) to actual systemic change in current or future professional work.

Approved for 1.0 hour of CFLE continuing education credit.

Remembering a Family-Centered Humorist

Jeanne Robertson, the down-home, squeaky-clean humorist with a huge YouTube following, died on Aug. 21. Ms. Robertson, who was awarded Miss Congeniality at the 1963 Miss America Pageant, became a renowned public speaker and served as president of the National Speakers Association.

But she found national fame for her comedy, which gently poked fun at her family and Southern heritage. Many of her humorous stories involve her husband, who she affectionately named "Left Brain."

In this week's featured video, Ms. Robertson details an ill-fated trip by her husband to the grocery store. Rest in peace, Jeanne Robertson.
