NCFR Webinar
Integrating Acceptance, Belonging, and Community Components into Early Childhood Education Tuesday, Nov. 12 / 10 – 11 a.m. CT
Presented by: Sandy Lookabaugh, Ph.D., and Lisa Godwin, Ph.D.
Early childhood is the optimal time to introduce and reinforce prosocial attitudes and skills of acceptance, belonging, and community. Educators, at all levels, however, may be hesitant to directly engage in these conversations despite the importance of embedding these concepts within curricula and programing during this optimal time of learning.
As a result of attending the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Instill a sense of acceptance, belonging, and community within early childhood learning experiences;
- Use classroom materials as mechanisms to introduce conversations related to acceptance, belonging, and community;
- Be intentional with their approach to learning experiences and conversations around acceptance, belonging, and community; and
- Model appropriate language related to relevance and importance of acceptance, belonging, and community when talking with parents, colleagues, and administrators.
In this webinar, Sandy Lookabaugh, Ph.D., and Lisa Godwin, Ph.D., will offer methods on how to instill a sense of acceptance, belongingness, and community within planned learning experiences and conversations, and more!

NCFR Teaching Tuesday
Using Reflexive Pedagogy to Enhance Student Learning Tuesday, Dec. 10 / Noon – 1 p.m. CT Free for NCFR members to attend
Presenter: Lyndal Khaw, Ph.D.
Reflexive pedagogy is a teaching and learning approach used with the intention of creating more self-awareness, fostering critical thinking, and facilitating meaning-making through lived experiences and shared knowledge. Helping students to think reflexively can be especially beneficial in courses that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). To teach and learn reflexively goes beyond the occasional reflection paper assignment or two. During this Teaching Tuesday, Lyndal Khaw, Ph.D., will have an open dialogue on how reflexive pedagogy can be incorporated into all aspects of a course, including the language in a syllabus, selection of course materials, discussion touchpoints, and class activities.
After a brief presentation, participants will have the opportunity to discuss:
- ideas on how to incorporate reflexive pedagogy into their teaching practices;
- opportunities for and challenges of using reflexive pedagogy; and
- how reflexive pedagogy can be measured for effectiveness.
REGISTER TO ATTEND
NCFR members can access past recordings of Teaching Tuesdays. If you would like to be a future session facilitator, contact Jessica Oswald.

Call for Submissions | Family Focus The Psychological Impact of Privilege Proposal Deadline Nov. 20
Family life provides early learning experiences to create and maintain healthy relationships with other people, an important component of health and well-being. Yet family life experiences are influenced by one’s social address, which includes characteristics of one’s identity (e.g., race, religion, sexuality, class). Social address is associated with social advantages, or privileges, that influence family life experiences.
For this issue of Family Focus, the editor invites you to consider the psychological impact of social advantages that promote exclusion, injustice, and isolation. Specifically, in which ways does privilege disrupt the ability of individuals, families, and society to create and maintain healthy relationships?
Prospective authors should submit their proposals by Nov. 20 using the online submission form. All authors will be notified by Dec. 2, and articles are due Jan. 10, 2025. Contact the editor with questions.
