NCFR Webinar
Integrating Emotion Coaching into Youth Mentoring Programs Tuesday, Sept. 24 / 11 a.m. – Noon CT
Presented by: Jen Krafchick, Ph.D., CFLE, and Lindsey Weiler, Ph.D., LMFT
Multiple indicators demonstrate high numbers of youth are struggling emotionally, especially youth with adverse childhood experiences. Youth need support to improve their emotional well-being. Those who work with youth need enhanced skills to offer appropriate support.
Emotion coaching in a mentoring context is a new and innovative approach. Coupled with trauma-informed practices and a diversity, equity, and inclusion framework, emotion coaching provides an effective approach to mentor/protégé interactions. Emotion coaching fosters youth's capacity for emotion regulation (i.e., identifying emotions, modifying or tolerating emotions, practicing regulatory strategies, and evaluating success of those strategies).
In this webinar, Jen Krafchick, Ph.D., CFLE, and Lindsey Weiler, Ph.D., LMFT, will provide the basic concepts of emotion coaching and its benefits.

Upcoming NCFR Teaching Tuesday
The Need for Cultural Humility in Classrooms Tuesday, Sept. 17 / Noon – 1 p.m. CT Free for NCFR members to attend
Presenter: Dee Hill-Zuganelli, Ph.D.
Cultural humility emphasizes an ongoing process of continual learning and critical self-reflection to work effectively with diverse families and communities, and challenge institutions to take accountability for their practices. Students are expected to encounter unfamiliar situations at the start of the cultural humility process and are assumed to handle challenges proactively. Today’s political restriction of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives requires Family Science students to seek additional support to stay motivated for continual learning. During this Teaching Tuesday, Dee Hill-Zuganelli, Ph.D., will share teaching and supportive strategies to address such barriers in building cultural humility.
After a brief presentation, participants will have the opportunity to discuss:
- the fit of Family Science courses into the cultural humility framework;
- overcoming stumbling blocks encountered in the learning process;
- how to stay dedicated and support oneself as anti-DEI initiatives unfold.

NCFR Teaching Tuesday
Using Reflexive Pedagogy to Enhance Student Learning Tuesday, Dec. 10 / Noon – 1 p.m. CT Free for NCFR members to attend
Presenter: Lyndal Khaw, Ph.D.
Reflexive pedagogy is a teaching and learning approach used with the intention of creating more self-awareness, fostering critical thinking, and facilitating meaning-making through lived experiences and shared knowledge. Helping students to think reflexively can be especially beneficial in courses that focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). To teach and learn reflexively goes beyond the occasional reflection paper assignment or two. During this Teaching Tuesday, Lyndal Khaw, Ph.D., will have an open dialogue on how reflexive pedagogy can be incorporated into all aspects of a course, including the language in a syllabus, selection of course materials, discussion touchpoints, and class activities.
After a brief presentation, participants will have the opportunity to discuss:
- ideas on how to incorporate reflexive pedagogy into their teaching practices;
- opportunities for and challenges of using reflexive pedagogy; and
- how reflexive pedagogy can be measured for effectiveness.

Call for Submissions | Family Focus The Psychological Impact of Privilege Proposal Deadline Nov. 20
Family life provides early learning experiences to create and maintain healthy relationships with other people, an important component of health and well-being. Yet family life experiences are influenced by one’s social address, which includes characteristics of one’s identity (e.g., race, religion, sexuality, class). Social address is associated with social advantages, or privileges, that influence family life experiences.
For this issue of Family Focus, the editor invites you to consider the psychological impact of social advantages that promote exclusion, injustice, and isolation. Specifically, in which ways does privilege disrupt the ability of individuals, families, and society to create and maintain healthy relationships?
Prospective authors should submit their proposals by Nov. 20 using the online submission form. All authors will be notified by Dec. 2, and articles are due Jan. 10, 2025. Contact the editor with questions.
