Integrating Acceptance, Belonging, and Community Components into Early Childhood Education
Tuesday, Nov. 12 / 10 – 11 a.m. CT
Presented by: Sandy Lookabaugh, Ph.D., and Lisa Godwin, Ph.D.

Early childhood is the optimal time to introduce and reinforce prosocial attitudes and skills of acceptance, belonging, and community. Educators, at all levels, however, may be hesitant to directly engage in these conversations despite the importance of embedding these concepts within curricula and programing during this optimal time of learning.

As a result of attending the webinar, participants will be able to:
  • Instill a sense of acceptance, belonging, and community within early childhood learning experiences;
  • Use classroom materials as mechanisms to introduce conversations related to acceptance, belonging, and community;
  • Be intentional with their approach to learning experiences and conversations around acceptance, belonging, and community; and
  • Model appropriate language related to relevance and importance of acceptance, belonging, and community when talking with parents, colleagues, and administrators.

In this webinar, Sandy Lookabaugh, Ph.D., and Lisa Godwin, Ph.D., will offer methods on how to instill a sense of acceptance, belongingness, and community within planned learning experiences and conversations, and more!

CALLS FOR ARTICLES
JFTR Cover
NCFR Journals
Call for Articles: Journal of Family Theory & Review

Proposal deadline extended to Nov. 1

Authors are invited to contribute to the special issue of
Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR) on the topic of "Theorizing and Doing Critical Intersectional Family Science." The roots of intersectionality are grounded in conversations, community, theorizing, and activism of Black women who found that the liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s did not fully address their concerns and needs. In 2014, Black feminist scholar and NCFR Fellow, April L. Few-Demo, Ph.D., wrote a comprehensive review about the utility and necessity of using intersectionality in Family Science in JFTR.

This special issue will take into consideration the ways in which intersectionality has been utilized, how it has evolved, challenges to applying and operationalizing intersectionality, as well as how the next generation of Family Scientists can extend the theory and its practical and methodological applications.

Submit your manuscript today — new deadline of Nov. 1!

The Psychological Impact of Privilege
Proposal Deadline Nov. 20

Family life provides early learning experiences to create and maintain healthy relationships with other people, an important component of health and well-being. Yet family life experiences are influenced by one’s social address, which includes characteristics of one’s identity (e.g., race, religion, sexuality, class). Social address is associated with social advantages, or privileges, that influence family life experiences.

For this issue of Family Focus, the editor invites you to consider the psychological impact of social advantages that promote exclusion, injustice, and isolation. Specifically, in which ways does privilege disrupt the ability of individuals, families, and society to create and maintain healthy relationships?

Prospective authors should submit their proposals by Nov. 20 using the online submission form. All authors will be notified by Dec. 2, and articles are due Jan. 10, 2025. Contact the editor with questions.

Cultivating Cultural Humility in Family Life Education
Submit Your Article by Dec. 15

Cultural humility involves self-reflection, an understanding that one’s own culture is not inherently superior, and appreciation of and a willingness to learn from the experiences of people from other backgrounds and cultures with the goal of authentic relationship building. The winter 2025 issue of CFLE Network will explore and expand on cultural humility in the context of Family Life Education (FLE). Articles are sought exploring “why” and “how” Family Life Educators should and can cultivate cultural humility in their work.

Examples of potential topics include:
  • The value of cultural humility as part of FLE work
  • Research supporting the importance of cultivating cultural humility in FLE
  • Your story of how you are cultivating your own cultural humility
  • The successes and/or challenges you have addressed as you support families on their journey towards cultural humility
  • Tips and/or resources that you have found to help you in this work
  • Differing perspectives on this topic (e.g., student/teacher; program leader/program participant)

The submission deadline is Dec. 15. Please review the author guidelines. When you submit your article, use our CFLE Network Article Submission Form.

Contact the CFLE Network Editor Beth Magistad, Ph.D., CFLE, with questions or for more information.

Stories About Your Favorite Halloween Candy

In the spirit of Halloween, this week's video showcases the top candies of the season. And the Top 10 weren’t surprising, however, the breakdown of the favorites by state offered some interesting results. For example, Ohio’s favorite Halloween candy is Blow Pops and in Montana, it’s Dubble Bubble Gum; Georgia’s fav is Swedish Fish and Lemonheads for Louisiana. In any case, check out the list toppers in order of popularity starting with the least popular, along with with morsels of their sweet—and not-so-sweet —origins mixed in.
