Sibling Interactions and Family Dynamics: Family Focus

Submit Your Proposal By March 7

The centrality of siblings as a source of influence and tension in family life is well-established. We know that increases in divorce, remarriage, and stepfamily formation added complexity to sibling interactions. What about the complexity of sibling interactions in the midst of global uncertainty and rapid social change?

Family Scientists are invited to offer insights on sibling interactions and family dynamics during times of social change and growing uncertainty about the future.

Example topics include:
  • How does caring for aging parents affect sibling relationships?
  • If and when do siblings share information about unknown siblings?
  • What role does social media play in sibling connection and interaction?
  • How do siblings adapt to alienation and exclusion?

Prospective authors should submit their proposals by March 7 using this online submission form. Contact the editor, Joyce Serido, Ph.D., with questions.

Family Focus is a section of NCFR Report member magazine.

NCFR Teaching Tuesday
Teaching Family Life Education Methodology

Tuesday, March 5 / Noon – 1 p.m. CT
Free for NCFR members / Become a member
Presenter: Bridget Walsh, Ph.D., CFLE

Family Life Education (FLE) methodology is a content area that focuses on practice. When teaching FLE methodology, instructors and students have much to attend to regarding program planning and evaluation, but that is only one part of an FLE methodology course and subsumes many other components. For example, sensitivity to others, and creating learning environments that demonstrate sensitivity to diversity are also important in FLE methodology.

Certified Family Life Educators (CFLEs) have additional professional and ethical obligations to reach diverse families and to demonstrate cultural humility in the areas of program goals, program structure, and the nature of education. For those teaching FLE methodology, it is essential to understand how to best prepare future CFLEs.

After a short presentation, the discussion will include:
  • Resources, strengths, and challenges in teaching FLE methodology
  • Cultural humility in the classroom

NCFR members can access past recordings of Teaching Tuesdays. If you would like to be a future session facilitator, contact Jessica Oswald at jessicaoswald@ncfr.org.

Upcoming Webinar
Gender Development, Identity, and Expression:
A Biopsychosocial Perspective

Wednesday, March 20 / 11 a.m. – Noon CT
Facilitator: Hilary A. Rose, Ph.D., CFLE

Gender development is vastly more complex and complicated than simple dichotomies or traditional binaries. Models have been developed to help understand this multifaceted trait but have yet to fully explain variations with gender over time.

To begin clarifying this intricacy, Hilary Rose, Ph.D., CFLE, will provide evidence surrounding the complexities of gender development, gender identity, and gender expression from a biopsychosocial perspective. This will include information and examples on the uniqueness of each level or stage of gender development.

This webinar will be useful for those wishing to better understand the complexities of gender development and gender diversity to support their own personal and professional relationships.

Approved for 1.0 hour of CFLE continuing education
