Responding to Violence at a Minneapolis Church
The loss of life from the mass shooting in Minneapolis is a senseless tragedy. The hearts of the NCFR staff go out to the families affected by the violence at Annunciation Catholic Church. The City of Minneapolis has curated resources for parents and caregivers, and created a fund to support the victims and families affected by this tragedy. To donate, you can text ACF1 to 41444. Another way to help people impacted by gun violence locally is to donate blood through organizations such as the Red Cross.
Over the years, NCFR has called upon its members and Certified Family Life Educators (CFLEs) to understand and respond to gun violence as family scholars and practitioners. They have conducted research and shared best practices for prevention, created recommendations for policymakers, and curated resources to help families cope in the aftermath of violence. In May, NCFR joined more than 400 organizations to advocate for increased federal funding for gun violence prevention research, signing a letter released by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
We also recognize that tragedies like these often raise broader concerns about gun violence and its profound impact on individuals, families, and communities as we try to grapple with how to respond, how to support, and how to prevent this violence.
Please consider sharing NCFR gun violence resources with your networks, and please let us know of any additional resources we should add.
In times of grief, connection and support are more important than ever. We are thinking of you and extend our deepest compassion. |

NEW RESEARCH AND POLICY BRIEF |
|
|
|
Read NCFR's NEW Research and Policy Brief
Promoting Positive Coparenting
Coparenting refers to the cooperation, coordination, and management of conflict between parents and parent figures who raise children. Scientific research has shown that the quality of the coparenting relationship affects the well-being of parents and the development of children in any family structure beyond other factors such as a parent–child relationship. |
|
|
|
Despite this evidence, social, economic, and family policies across the globe have neglected coparenting. This neglect results in missed opportunities to optimize parent, child, and family health and well-being, and it allows for the persistence of certain family, work, and service-related gender inequalities and the exclusion of caregivers.
This policy brief takes an international perspective in offering recommendations to support and acknowledge the coparenting relationship through social, economic, and family policies. The brief makes several policy recommendations based on results from contemporary studies, framing recommendations broadly enough to be applicable in the political, social, and legal systems of diverse countries yet specifically enough to provide guidance for researchers and policymakers in making progress in this area.

NCFR Nexus: Winter 2026 Call for Articles
Submission deadline: Nov. 1
The winter 2026 issue of NCFR Nexus will explore later adulthood. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the median age of the United States population is increasing. Growing numbers of older adults presents both opportunities and challenges. Many older adults live healthy, independent lives while others require significant care, often by unpaid family members.
Examples of potential topics include the following and more:
-
What does the research tell us about the well-being of later-life adults?
-
How can communities support healthy aging?
-
What kind of support do families need when they are caring for elders?
-
How are colleges and universities preparing the next generation of family professionals to serve older adults and their families?
-
How do Family Life Educators support older adults and multigenerational families in their practices?
NCFR Nexus seeks to bring together the voices of researchers, educators, practitioners, and policymakers, fostering a diverse knowledge exchange. The NCFR Nexus editor invites authors to submit applied research-focused, teaching and learning-focused, and practice-focused articles that explore later adulthood.
Prospective authors should submit their articles through the NCFR Nexus Article Submission Form by Nov. 1, 2025. Contact the NCFR Nexus editor, Beth Magistad, Ph.D., CFLE, with questions, ideas, and intentions.
