NCFR Research and Policy Brief: NEW Off the Press

Improving States' Infant and Family Health Equity Through Equitable Housing Policies

NCFR's new research and policy brief, co-authored by NCFR Fellow Shelley MacDermid Wadsworth, Ph.D., CFLE, highlights the interconnectedness between housing and health during prenatal care, at birth, and throughout infancy. The brief also considers the economic cost to the U.S. of maintaining discriminatory policies and unfair practices in areas of housing and health (e.g., residential segregation, limited access to health-care services).

Readers will also find relevant state-level legislation and initiatives to improve infant health, and ultimately family well-being, through fair housing practices and policies. To that end, local and state policymakers can pursue several avenues to improve the well-being of families experiencing housing instability or homelessness, whether expecting a child or having recently welcomed a new infant to their family. States can do the following:

  • Improve health and housing outcomes by supporting programs that are intentional about providing services for both issues at the same time.

  • Promote health from pregnancy throughout infancy.

  • Ensure access to secure, affordable, and safe housing.

Healthy Urban Families: Interconnections Between Social Determinants

International Federation for Family Development (IFFD)

NCFR student member Francisca Lawson Tettevie, M.S., doctoral student, recently wrote an article for the International Federation for Family Development (IFFD). In the paper, Ms. Tettevie states that healthy cities are defined by their capacity to support the potential and well-being of all individuals and families. To this point, she remarks that the most effective intervention is one that will recognize the interconnected nature of human experience, creating supportive ecosystems that enable individuals to realize their full potential, thereby building long-term resilience for families and communities.

We want to also point out that Ms. Tettevie will be speaking at the U.N. International Day of Families, on behalf of an IFFD working group.
