2 Family Relations Articles Acknowledged for Excellence
Thompson List Recognizes Military-Family Research
Two articles published in NCFR's Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science (FR) in 2024 are featured on this year's Thompson List, which "reflects the year's most impactful scholarship in military and veteran research."
Among the five finalists for the Thompson Award — given by the Military Family Research Institute at Purdue University in partnership with Military REACH at Auburn University — is the article "Gender role reversal: Civilian husbands of U.S. military servicewomen as tied-migrant workers," authored by L. Emily Dowling, Jeffrey B. Jackson*, and Ashley L. Landers*.
Also included on the Thompson List of 11 articles is "Traumatic brain injury and relationship distress during military deployment and reunion," authored by Leanne K. Knobloch* and Bryan Abendschein.

In Memoriam
Nelwyn Barnard Moore |
|
|
|
Nelwyn Barnard Moore, Ph.D., CFLE, passed away on Oct. 13, 2025, at the age of 95. She was an NCFR member for 40 years and served as chair of the Education and Enrichment Section, and on the original task force to study the formation of the Family Science discipline.
Dr. Moore was a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) for 38 years and played a role in the program's formation. Her research and curriculum innovations were widely published in journals, textbooks, anthologies, exploring topics related to the cross-cultural understanding Family Life Education. |

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the teaching of family relationships, she was awarded the Ernest G. Osborne Award by NCFR in 2003.

UC Agriculture and Natural Resources seeks an assistant-rank 4-H Youth development advisor focused on outdoor education, serving Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, and Sierra Counties. Based in Susanville, the advisor will develop applied research and extension programs that promote positive youth development, expand outdoor education opportunities, and strengthen 4-H participation. Responsibilities include teaching through multiple 4-H delivery models, supervising community club programs, supporting volunteers and staff, building partnerships with local agencies, and contributing 15% effort to statewide outdoor education initiatives. The role requires conducting applied research, publishing findings, and sharing results through diverse outreach methods to improve youth skills, leadership, and community engagement.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies seeks a Certified Child Life Specialist for a nine-month, renewable lecturer position with a promotion pathway. The lecturer will teach 1–2 courses per semester and lead a year-round community-based child health internship for master’s students, including training, supervision, and assessment. Responsibilities include developing course materials, mentoring students, building partnerships with hospitals and child-centered organizations, and ensuring compliance with professional standards.
