NCFR's Stands Against Violence

The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) mourns the loss of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Rep. Melissa Hortman and her spouse, Mark, and is saddened by the wounding of Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his spouse, Yvette. We encourage everyone in the family field to join us in standing against these acts of violence. Together, let's move forward with empathy and unity to connect, support, and care for one another. Let's continue to find ways for every family to thrive throughout complex systems and societies.

Rep. Hortman's surviving children have asked that their parents be honored by caring for one another and building community. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Lend a helping hand in one's neighborhood.

  • Volunteer at a local organization–give of one's time and/or money.

  • Bake or cook for someone in need or someone who's ill.

  • Do a favor, like grocery shopping, for a friend or neighbor.

  • Advocate for a cause–stand up for that in which you believe.

  • Train for/join a marathon.

NCFR RESEARCH

June JFTR Features Collection on Sexual & Gender Diversity in Families

The June issue of NCFR’s Journal of Family Theory & Review includes a six-article special collection on sexual and gender diversity in families, in which authors "extend existing theoretical models and offer new theoretical frameworks about LGBTQ+ families," writes JFTR Editor and NCFR Fellow Katherine R. Allen, Ph.D.* in her editorial for the issue. "JFTR presents this symposium as an exercise in abstract theorizing because such examples in the family field are difficult to find."

The collection, guest edited by NCFR Fellow Stephen T. Russell, Ph.D.*, and Gaëlle Meslay, Ph.D., also includes as authors Armin A. Dorri, Ph.D., Leonardo Kattari, Ph.D., Yiu Tung Suen, D.Phil., Kelseanne Breder, Ph.D., PMHNP-BC, Walter Bockting, Ph.D., LP, Rachel H. Farr, Ph.D.*, Krystal K. Cashen, Ph.D.*, Madi T. Diomede, Ph.D.*, and Kay A. Simon, Ph.D.*.

NCFR's Sexuality Focus Group would like to inform you that the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) invites submissions for their special issue of "Sexes: Relationship Guidance, Mindfulness, and Couple Well-Being."

Relationship education has long provided help to couples working to strengthen their relationship. Contemplative practices such as mindfulness, self-compassion, and intentional communication strategies have shown effectiveness in helping couples address common problems within a marriage and other long-term relationships. These skills are making important contributions to how relationship education is delivered, its effectiveness, and participant acceptance. Therapists are also interested in incorporating contemplative skills into therapy and have seen positive outcomes in relational and sexual well-being. This special issue will address the most recent findings and uses of these skills in relationship education and therapy.
