NEW NCFR Policy Corner

Introducing a new addition to Zippy—NCFR’s Policy Corner—a bi-weekly segment dedicated to keeping our community informed, engaged, and connected around key policy and advocacy issues affecting families and Family Science primarily in the U.S.

The Policy Corner will spotlight policy and advocacy efforts that our community of members are elevating, tracking, and mobilizing around in support of our shared vision: Every Family Thriving

Have a policy issue on your radar? We'd love to hear from you! Share your insights with us at policy@ncfr.org.

On this week’s radar:

  • Congress is in recess for the month of August. It’s a great time to contact your legislators to advocate for Family Science and other social sciences by using NCFR's Policy Advocacy Toolkit to get started.

  • Executive Order 14332 “Improving Oversight of Federal Grantmaking” could lead to delays in review and funding for organizations and institutions receiving federal funding.

  • While our last issue focused on the impacts of H.R.1 on families, this issue will focus on the impact of the changes to the tax law for charitable giving on nonprofits serving families and higher education institutions.

  • HHS publishes statement to limit access to programs such as Head Start for undocumented families.

Check out the Policy Corner for more information!

CALL FOR ARTICLES

NCFR Nexus: Winter 2026 Call for Articles

Submission deadline: Nov. 1

The winter 2026 issue of NCFR Nexus will explore later adulthood. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the median age of the United States population is increasing. Growing numbers of older adults presents both opportunities and challenges. Many older adults live healthy, independent lives while others require significant care, often by unpaid family members.

Examples of potential topics include the following and more:

  • What does the research tell us about the well-being of later-life adults?

  • How can communities support healthy aging?

  • What kind of support do families need when they are caring for elders?

  • How are colleges and universities preparing the next generation of family professionals to serve older adults and their families?

  • How do Family Life Educators support older adults and multigenerational families in their practices?

NCFR Nexus seeks to bring together the voices of researchers, educators, practitioners, and policymakers, fostering a diverse knowledge exchange. The NCFR Nexus editor invites authors to submit applied research-focused, teaching and learning-focused, and practice-focused articles that explore later adulthood.

Prospective authors should submit their articles through the NCFR Nexus Article Submission Form by Nov. 1, 2025. Contact the NCFR Nexus editor, Beth Magistad, Ph.D., CFLE, with questions, ideas, and intentions.

A Brief But Spectacular Take On Appreciating What We Have

In celebration and recognition of World Senior Citizen's Day, the video this week features Ms. Lucile Day when PBS NewsHour sat down with her for their "Brief But Spectacular" in which the brightest thinkers, makers, artists and inventors give their take on topics that inspire them. Ms. Day has been living on her grandparent's land, the same home, since the age of 5. If there is a secret to aging, this is it: do the best you can when you can; treat your body and your mind right; treat other people like you want to be treated and enjoy life.
