2025 NCFR Annual Conference

Meet Our Plenary Presenters

(left to right) Jocelyn Smith Lee, Ph.D.; Russ Toomey, Ph.D.; Cecilia Menjívar, Ph.D.; Annette Lareau, Ph.D.; Blair Sackett, Ph.D.

NCFR is excited to introduce you to this year's annual conference plenary presenters. We are looking forward to the scholarly contributions they will make and the impact they will have on the work and lives of conference attendees. The goal of this year’s conference is to comprehensively analyze the intersections among race, economy, and education, and explore the ramifications for power relations, privilege, and social differences, all through the lens of families.

Jocelyn Smith Lee, Ph.D., is NCFR's opening plenary luncheon presenter, in which she will address the unequal burdens of violence and grief faced by young Black men in Baltimore (fun fact, Dr. Smith Lee has Baltimore roots).

Russ Toomey, Ph.D., is the Thursday plenary presenter, in which he will present research on the family relationships of trans and gender diverse youth and how we can best support families to help their trans kids thrive.

Cecilia Menjívar, Ph.D., will be our Friday plenary presenter, wherein she will discuss the origins of Temporary Protected Status for immigrants in the U.S. and how it profoundly shapes the lives of immigrants and their families.

Annette Lareau, Ph.D., and Blair Sackett, Ph.D., will be NCFR's co-presenters on Saturday, wherein they will discuss cultural knowledge, class difference, and barriers to mobility.
