NCFR Awards and Recognition
Two Members Receive NCFR's Prestigious Fellow Status

The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) has awarded the organization's prestigious Fellow status to two members (left to right, above): M. Elise Radina, Ph.D., CFLE; and Claire Kamp Dush, Ph.D.

They join a unique rank of NCFR members who have made outstanding and enduring contributions to Family Science in scholarship, teaching, outreach, and professional service, including service to NCFR.

Drs. Radina and Kamp Dush will be recognized as new fellows at the 2024 NCFR Annual Conference, Nov. 20-23, in Bellevue, Washington.

Who Will Be This Year's NCFR Awardees?

Each year, NCFR awards are bestowed upon distinguished scholars and practitioners who have dedicated themselves to working in the family field and have achieved outstanding accomplishments.

Now's your chance to nominate yourself, your students, colleagues, professors, and mentors for an award from NCFR and its member groups.

The deadline for most awards is May 1 (unless indicated otherwise). There are a few awards that have alternate deadlines:

Cognella Innovation in Teaching Award (May 31)
Affiliate Councils Awards (June 1)
Dawn Cassidy CFLE Special Recognition Award (Sept. 1)

Call for Nominations & Applications
Editor, Family Relations

Apply by Aug. 1

Nominations and applications are sought for the editor of Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science. The committee anticipates selecting a candidate by Oct. 1, and the new editor will be announced at the 2024 annual conference in Bellevue, Washington.

The five-year term of the new editor will begin January 2025. Nominees and applicants must be members of NCFR.

April Issues of Journal of Marriage and Family & Family Relations

Keep up with the latest research from all three of NCFR's scholarly journals advancing Family Science. Journal of Marriage & Family (JMF), Family Relations: Interdisciplinary Journal of Applied Family Science (FR), and Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR).

April issues are now available for both JMF and FR. Additionally, JFTR released its March issue.

New articles published last week between March 24 and March 30 across all journals can be found on the NCFR website.

NCFR members with journal subscriptions can access the full text of articles on the journals section of the website.

Theorizing and Doing Critical Intersectional Family Science: Special Issue of Journal of Family Theory & Review

Submissions Due Sept. 1

The Journal of Family Theory & Review (JFTR) invites submissions for a special issue about intersectionality and how it might be studied in Family Science.

NCFR members April Few-Demo, Ph.D., Veronica Barrios, Ph.D., and Dana Weiser, Ph.D., will serve as special issue editors.

Authors are invited to consider how intersectionality has evolved, tensions within the theory and with other critical theories, institutional barriers to teaching intersectionality, challenges to applying and operationalizing intersectionality in research and best practices, the state of intersectionality in Family Science, and how intersectionality might be studied given current sociohistorical contexts and cultural narratives.

This call asks authors to consider how intersectionality has been utilized and how the next generation of Family Scientists can extend the theory and its practical and methodological applications.

Family Focus on Health Disparities

Submissions Due May 20

NCFR members are invited to contribute an article to the spring 2025 issue of the Family Focus section of NCFR Report on the theme Health Disparities. Access to Family Focus articles is a benefit of NCFR membership.

Articles are sought that address both mental and physical health issues, how those issues affect family functioning and interactions, as well as promising approaches and practices for addressing health disparities.

How Transracial Adoptive Families Can Acknowledge and Navigate Race
Tuesday, April 9 / 11 a.m. – Noon CT
Presented by: Katie M. Hrapczynski, Ph.D., LCMFT

Transracial adoptive families can challenge traditional expectations of familial connections, raising important questions about the intersection of race, ethnicity, and nationality. In the context of the United States — where transracial adoptive families often involve White parents raising children of different racial backgrounds — concerns about meeting the developmental needs of these children are prevalent. However, many practitioners voice concern over feeling ill-prepared to work with transracial adoptive families. To best serve transracial families, practitioners must confront their personal beliefs and biases and become well-versed in the common and unique circumstances of transracial adoptive families.

Katie M. Hrapczynski, Ph.D., LCMFT, will discuss the historical context of transracial adoptions while also exploring individual factors, family dynamics, and environmental conditions that impact the well-being of transracial adoptees and their families. By the end of this webinar, attendees will possess a nuanced understanding of the complexities inherent in transracial adoptive families and will have practical tools to enhance supporting transracial adoptive families.

Microskills refer to specific communication techniques and strategies that are employed to establish rapport and effectively interact with families. Despite their significance, the development of these skills is often overlooked or undervalued.

Join Rachel Tambling, Ph.D., LMFT, and Carissa D'Aniello-Heyda, Ph.D., LMFT, as they introduce various microskills through demonstrations.
