2024 NCFR Annual Conference

Proposal Mentoring is Available!
Submit Draft Proposal by Feb. 15

If this is your first time submitting to a conference, we invite and encourage you to work with a proposal mentor. NCFR has assembled a cadre of supportive mentors who will give you feedback before you submit your proposal online. To participate, email a draft proposal to Cindy Winter at cindywinter@ncfr.org to be matched with a mentor.

Deadline is Thursday, Feb. 15. We don't want you to miss out on this opportunity!

This is a great opportunity available for undergraduate students and/or first-time NCFR conference participants.

Building Resilience Among Individuals, Families, and Communities

Conference proposals are now being accepted for NCFR 2024 (Nov. 20-23 in Bellevue, Washington). The full call for proposals and instructions can be found on our website. Proposals are due March 4, 2024 — by 11:59 p.m. PST.

Please spread the news among your colleagues, students, peers, and networks. Invite them to also submit a proposal or perhaps collaborate with them on a proposal. When sharing, you can mention this:

There is no proposal submission fee for NCFR.
You may submit more than one proposal as first author (collaborate with students).
Proposals do not have to be part of a symposium.
Choose from among the variety of 13 individual calls that NCFR offers, to include specific family topics, professional development for students, state/regional interests, theory construction, and more!

We also provide you with a proposal grading rubric so you can review it as you prepare to submit your proposal.

We are looking for volunteer reviewers in preparation for the 2024 NCFR Annual Conference. Conference proposal reviewers contribute to a high quality program by helping decide which proposals will be presented during the conference. All proposals are blind peer-reviewed.

This is a unique opportunity for NCFR members only — faculty, researchers, doctoral students, new professionals, CFLEs, practitioners, and others — to:

add the experience to your CV
ensure high quality proposals are presented at the conference
enhance your involvement with NCFR

A mutually beneficial partnership between faculty mentors and student mentees can increase both the quality and quantity of research produced, while also improving the skills of both the learners and instructors.

This webinar for faculty — new or seasoned — will demonstrate how to develop and maintain a research mentoring relationship in a university setting. Strategies for addressing current factors that influence success within the mentoring process will be shared, as well as examples of implementing research mentorship across universities and disciplines.

Apply relational and systemic processes to develop and maintain research mentoring relationships;
Recognize and overcome common challenges for developing mutually-beneficial mentoring relationships; and

CFLE Emeritus Dianne Browne, Ph.D., CFLE, CSE, was recently awarded the Sex Ed Impact Award at the 2023 National Sex Ed Conference. This award recognizes those that make significant contributions to the field of sexuality education throughout the nation.

Sothy Eng, Ph.D., was the recipient of the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching from the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

Call for Authors: Family Focus

Sibling Interactions and Family Dynamics
Proposal Deadline Extended: March 7

The centrality of siblings as a source of influence and tension in family life is well-established. We know that increases in divorce, remarriage, and stepfamily formation added complexity to sibling interactions. What about the complexity of sibling interactions in the midst of global uncertainty and rapid social change?

Family Scientists are encouraged to submit evidence-based proposals that critically examine the internal and external factors that influence sibling interactions, sibling relationships, and broader family dynamics, highlighting challenges and opportunities for growth and well-being.

Example topics include:

How does caring for aging parents affect sibling relationships?
If and when do siblings share information about unknown siblings?
What role does social media play in sibling connection and interaction
How do siblings adapt to alienation and exclusion?

New CFLE Opportunity

Call for 2024 Grant Proposals: NCFR Darling FLE Research Initiative Grant
Grant Applications Open March 1

The purpose of the NCFR Darling Grant is to integrate research into the practice of Family Life Education, a priority for both NCFR and Dr. Carol Darling.

This $5,000 biennial grant can help Family Life Educators, researchers, and programs that often lack funding to conduct research needed to support and maintain their projects and services.

Examples of potential projects might include:

Collaboration of a researcher or educator and a practitioner to evaluate the effectiveness of specific FLE programs;
Examine best practices in designing and/or implementing a program for one or more demographic, racial or ethnic, cultural, or historically marginalized groups;
Compare different programmatic delivery methods such as teaching in-person versus online;
Assess the impact of state laws and regulations on the dissemination of FLE programs;
Examine the implementation of FLE across international settings.

Postdoctoral Fellow Human Development and Family Science
University of Missouri

The Department of Human Development and Family Science seeks applicants for a postdoctoral fellow to work with faculty at the Center for Family Policy and Research (CFPR). This position is a 12-month appointment with potential for renewal or long-term academic appointment (research scientist or non-tenure track research faculty), pending an externally funded program of research. This position entails seeking and writing federal grants, collaborate with faculty on peer-reviewed research publications, translational research and policy-relevant topics, and writing federal grants for themselves (e.g., K99/R00). The start date is July 1, 2024.
